Mission:

Because of the sacredness of God’s creation, we encourage personal/parish actions and consumer choices that will heal and nurture all life on earth.

Objectives:

  • Support and promote earth-friendly practices in the parish, homes and workplaces.

  • Advocate for habitat conservation and environmental concerns by partnering with others.

  • Organize Earth Day (April 22nd) activities the closest weekend to that day.

  • Invite parishioners to participate in earth care projects and encourage recycling efforts.

Primary Activities:

  • Oakland County Adopt-a-Road Cleanup Program – SJF volunteers pick up litter on Walton Blvd., between Squirrel Road and Perry Street, in the spring and fall.

  • Recycling efforts – SJF office recycles catalogs and newspapers. All cans, plastic jugs, and glass are recycled from the kitchen. We sponsor monthly SJF Recycling Weekends (first full weekend of each month) whereby parishioners can recycle batteries, plastic grocery bags, inkjet cartridges, and plastic beverage carriers.

  • Celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd) with parish activities on the appropriate weekend.

  • Maintain an Earthcare Resources library cart.

  • Maintain the parking lot beds with native plants and perennials.

  • Write informative messages in the weekly SJF bulletins.

Statement of Resource Needs (Time, Talent, Treasure)

This ministry needs a ministry chairperson, an Earth care committee, and many volunteers to participate in monthly projects and on-going recycling efforts. Because of the transformations being advocated by this ministry, persons involved have a personal passion/commitment to living in right relationship with the whole earth community and an openness to changing personal consumer habits in order to live more in harmony with all the earth. A budget for $320 has been submitted for fiscal year 2004-05.

Ministry with Community -Special Emphasis: For 2004-2005

This ministry will continue to promote ways to meet Challenge 4 (stewardship) as stated in the Pentecost 2003 Pastoral Letter in regards to caring for creation. Conscience formation is included as a foundational way of promoting right relationships to the whole Earth community.
